What equipment do you need for Freestyle?
- The most important equipment you need is a quality 160 gram freestyle disc, either a Wham-O Freestyle Frisbee, or a Discraft Sky-Styler. Most pros currently use the Discraft Sky-Styler.. Another disc that is good for freestyle is the All-Pro by Wham-O (140 grams). It’s great for air brushing. Having a quality disc makes a huge difference for both doing tricks and for throwing. A lot of people who don't play figure it doesn't make a difference. Using a bad flying disc is like trying to play tennis using a frying pan as a tennis racket. It can be done, but you will be very limited.
- Silicone Spray. In order to spin the disc on your finger nail (yes the nail, not the finger) you need to cut down on friction so the disc will keep spinning. Spray the bottom of the disc and wipe with a rag. Also spray the top middle of the Frisbee. Not all Silicone sprays are created equal. Some work better than others. Most popular is Krylon silicone spray. Spray-On is also good.
- Where to buy Discs? If you want Discraft Sky-Stylers you should purchase them from either Discovering The World or The Wright Life. They both have websites and mail order catalogs.
You can buy the Wham-O Freestyle 160 Sport Disc at Wal-Mart and most sporting goods stores along with the All-Pro. Discovering the World and The Wright Life also have all types of Wham-O discs that you can't find in the stores.
OTHER EQUIPMENT
- Freestyle Nails. Most pros glue a hard plastic nail over their natural nail on their index finger and/or middle finger. Nails helps the disc spin even longer, and help you do more advanced tricks on the inside rim of the disc. However, the winningest player of all time, Larry Imperiale, doesn’t even use any Freestyle Nails. Fake Nails will make it easier to do the nail delay. You can make a nail out of a super glue container. Cut it to the shape of your nail so it's just a little longer than your natural nail and file it so the end is smooth, otherwise you might gauge the disc. Use a drop of superglue to secure the nail. I use contact cement and a drop of super glue after the contact cement dries.
- Athletic tape is usefull for putting over calouses and any blisters you might get if you haven't played for a while. Put a little bit of tape over the part of the finger that is effected.
- If you use nails. I suggest wrapping some athletic tape around your finger and over the lower part of the fake nail so you don't lose the nail if it falls off. Use enough tape to wind around your finger twice.
- Boom Box. Tunes are a crucial part of jamming. Good tunes playing on a Boom Box will inspire your creativity.
- A nice field with a sweet wind. It's not really equipment but it helps. The smoother the wind the easier it is to jam. A lot of players like to jam by the beach because the wind is from one direction and consistent. However, this is not a necessity. You can really jam anywhere at any time.
